Tommy Willis

Hello Campus Recreation Enthusiast!

My name is Tommy Willis and I am one of the Co-Founders of the Campus Rec Podcast. I am originally from Atlanta Georgia and attended Valdosta State University where I began my career in Campus Recreation as a climbing wall route setter. From there I began taking on multiple roles within the program and discovered my love for all things Campus Rec.

Upon graduating with a Bachelors in History I obtained a Graduate Assistantship within a Campus Recreation Department, but ultimately made the decision to withdraw because my degree program was not what I was looking for. So I took some time off and moved back to Atlanta and found a great job working at the nation largest climbing gym. I began taking classes at Georgia State University for my Masters in Secondary Education, but as time went on I realized that I missed the life of Campus Rec.

After being out of Campus Recreation for almost two years I decided to throw my hat back in the ring and obtained a Graduate Assistantship at The University of Mississippi, where I received a Master’s in Higher Education/Student Personnel. Upon graduating I found a professional job at Morehead State University where I served as the Coordinator of Outdoors and the Interim Aquatics Coordinator for 2 years.

Following my service at Morehead State University I had the opportunity to become the Assistant Director of Campus Recreation at Eastern Kentucky University and currently serve as the Senior Assistant Director of Campus Recreation.

At Eastern Kentucky University I oversee the Health Promotion and Adventure Programs Department, while teaching classes within the Recreation and Park Administration Department. I have continued my studies within higher education and am currently looking to graduate with my EdD Fall 2019. My dissertation focuses on the overall level of strength and or effect a higher education Campus Recreation and Wellness Center has on addressing mental illnesses associated with mood disorders.
